When Sam and her mom approached me earlier this year, they had the beginnings of an idea for a Catrina styled quince. Sam's quince will be dedicated to her deceased elders, specifically her grandfather, among others. We also came up with the unique half-face Sugar Skull makeup, for which they found a makeup artist to put it on and a Chiapas styled dress to complete the look.

We did several sessions in the same day, including this one, one shoot at the murals near Guillen Middle, and one in the studio. We even raced across town to Mt. Carmel cemetary to visit her grandparents, but it was closed when we arrived. Throughout, Sam asked if a shot was respectful. We assured her that the traditional Mexican Days of the Dead are meant to be Catholic based, and meant to honor the life (not the death) of the dearly departed.
